Shawnee Brasfield is a believer in stream restoration - especially now that he has physical evidence to prove that it works.

Brasfield is one of five landowners who participated in a project to restore natural meanders on a 2,000-foot section of the river in Crockett County.

Before the project began, Brasfield said, an inch or two of rain was more than the creek could handle. Floodwaters covered East Road and Brasfield's hardwood woodland and agricultural fields. Each flood washed a thick layer of silt into the forest, gradually smothering his timber.

That hasn't happened this year, despite a few heavy rains.

"Since they've done this work, it has not flooded," Brasfield said. "I really believe as well as this is working, the other landowners will want to do it."
